Background
The history of Nupe Kalvari church of Nigeria started in February. 1967. This happened when a Student called Evangelist John Aderinto met Mr Silas Jiya Emindayisa (now a trustee) at a village called Kudu in the present Mokwa local government area of Niger State as he (student) was doing his evangelical work in Nupeland. Aderinto was a student of Niger Baptist College Minna (now Ahmadu Bahago Sec School). They met discussed and left each other. Meanwhile. Mr Silas had left house in search of Barrack job.
Coincidentally as the student was back to Minna, Mr Silas Jiya Emindayisa was at Minnc and located at Kongila where John Aderinto was still looking for Nupe people to communicate the gospel to and met Mr Silas Jiya who was already a believer. The Second meeting strengthened his position and since Mr Silas Was looking for a job. he was taken to the principal of Niger Baptist and immediately was offered a job to work in their dining hall. This appointment Was also facilitated by one Mrs Adeniyi who was corn seller at the College.
At this point. Mr Silas Jiya started attending Baptist Church with his family but they could neither speak nor understand Yoruba as a language being used in the church. With this development as the spirit leads. Mr Silas Jiya chose in his mind and discussed with Aderinto that he would want to worship God in his own language which is Nupe. Aderinto concord with him and the following Sunday service (ie 22nd May. 1969) was held at his residence but in the name of Baptist Church with only six people in attendance.
The first assembly had a people of which 3 were NLpe speaking and three yorubas. Those in attendance are Mr Silas Jiya, Mrs Lami Jiya(wife), Emmanuel Jiya (son). Evang. John Aderinto, Mrs Adeniyi (worker with Niger Baptist College), Miss Comfort Adeniyi (daughter). The service leader was Mr Silas Jiya and the preacher Evang. John Aderinto and the total Sunday collection was Two shillings. Three pence (2t 3d) equivalent to Two naira, Three Kobo.
